Hit by Flak in the port engine shortly after bombing the Marshalling Yards at Laon, France on the night of April 22/23 rd 1944 Short Stirling, HA-M (EH942) captained by S/Ldr Poulter was then attacked and severely damaged by a German Nightfighter believed to have been flown by Oblt Dietrich Schmidt, 8./NJG1. Five of the crew managed to bailout while the gallant pilot struggled with the stricken bomber. Squadron Leader Poulter and his flight engineer, Flight Sergeant Frederick Walter Lambert were found dead in the wreckage of the cockpit the following day. It is believed that this was S/Ldr Poulters first operation in 3 years.
