Killed when his Short Stirling, R.9190 HA-E crashed into the sea off the island of Sio on Sunday 11 th October 1942 the victim of Flak. The pilot, Sergeant Hill and five crew survived to become P.o.W’s.

The Burial of Sergeant Joseph Curle, 1111814 RAFVR

The photograph shows the burial at Odense Cemetery, Denmark. The German Army Chaplain Johannes Vorrath undertook the ceremony. A German Guard of Honour carried the coffin to the graves. Present were 1.Leutenant, Chief of Police Frost and the Administrator of the Cemetery Mr. Askegaard. Also attending and showing signs of fatigue and delayed shock are F/S Richards, mid-upper gunner and Sgt White rear gunner both of whom had been given permission to be present at the service.

The crew was on their 5 th operation when lost. R.9190 was Taken on Charge by No.218 squadron on September 16 th, it had flown only 37 flying hours when lost.
